Mechanical Solutions Engineer
Summary
We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to design and support custom solutions for powder-coating, curing, and conveying equipment. This role involves full lifecycle mechanical engineering—from concept development and design through release, support for both manufacturing and installation—while collaborating closely with the project manager, electrical engineering, and cross-functional teams. Candidates must be strong initiative-takers who can independently drive mechanical design of projects to completion.
Primary Responsibilities
- Design and release the mechanical part of custom coating, curing, and conveying systems using SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor.
- Develop systems incorporating blowers, fans, ductwork, structural steel, and large AC motor systems.
- Produce detailed 3D models, 2D drawings, weld specifications, and bill of materials.
- Lead mechanical design reviews and manage design timelines for short-term, fast-paced engineering projects.
- Collaborate with project manager to ensure equipment meets performance, throughput, and safety expectations.
- Coordinate with electrical engineering to ensure compatibility of mechanical systems with electrical controls, wiring, motors, and safety requirements.
- Mechanical design using IR heaters and thermal management principles.
- Test, evaluate, and qualify outside-sourced components to improve product reliability and reduce cost.
- Improve existing cure and convey equipment designs based on customer feedback, field data, and market needs.
- Provide mechanical engineering support as required to Manufacturing, Planner/Buyer, and Field Service Technicians.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, ISO quality standards, and applicable safety regulations.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- BSME or BSMET or equivalent engineering degree.
- Five to ten years of experience designing industrial equipment or related mechanical systems.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD and 2D drafting (SolidWorks, SolidWorks PDM, AutoCAD).
- Understanding of structural steel and sheet metal design and fabrication.
- Knowledge of heat transfer principles and IR heater integration.
- Ability to interpret and create welding specifications and mechanical drawings.
- Hands-on mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand tools and testing equipment.
- Effective communication skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams.
- Must be an initiative-taker with the ability to work independently and proactively manage tasks.
- Ability to travel 5% of the time to customer sites and other company facilities, as assigned.
- Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Preferred Knowledge & Experience
- Familiarity with powder coating or electrostatic liquid coating systems.
- Familiarity with automated finishing systems (spray booths, ovens, conveyors).
- Experience with airflow and thermal calculations.
- Knowledge of hazardous zone classifications and NFPA codes (NFPA 33, 86, 652/654).
- Experience with pneumatic system design and schematics.
- Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
